Hopscotch – where beer (hops) and scotch meet for a good time. This cleverly named bar-come-pub arrived on Lonsdale Street in Braddon a little over 18 months ago and quickly became the quintessential destination for a few laid back drinks with mates on a sunny afternoon.
With their big courtyard out the front, it is the perfect spot to down a few refreshing cocktails on those perfect Canberra summer days, when the sun is shining and you’ve got nowhere else to be. Unfortunately, the last week or so has seen more rain than sunshine in the capital, but we didn’t let that stop us from sneaking a few cocktails in between the storms last weekend.
Just to shake things up a bit for once, Steve and I swapped coffee for cocktails and found ourselves at Hopscotch on Saturday afternoon for our regular brother-sister catch up. In the afternoons from 3 to 5.30pm they have their “Inbetweeners” menu on offer, so we ordered some food to nibble on and settled in with some cocktails in the courtyard.
Cocktail-wise, we both went for one from their signature list. Steve was pretty happy with his choice – the “Lucky Charm” ($19), a refreshing combo of Jameson whiskey, apple liqueur, lemon juice and lime juice.
I went for the “Godmother” ($19) with bourbon whiskey, amaretto, lemon juice, lime juice, cherry juice and sugar, served with a flaming chartreuse lime garnish. And boy, was it delicious. If you like your cocktails strong and don’t mind a hint of cinnamon, then I recommend you give this one a go.
We slurped these down over a bowl of fries ($10) and a serve of their corn hush puppies ($14). The hush puppies are delicious deep-fried potato, corn and paprika bites that are best eaten dipped in their accompanying coriander sauce. I can also vouch for their crumbed jalapeños ($13), which are stuffed with cream cheese and served with tomato chutney.
Hopscotch is one of Steven’s favourite hang outs, so it seemed only appropriate that it feature in the Summer Cocktail Series. I am also a big fan of what they are calling “Popscotch Poptails” – an alcoholic popsicle topped with moscato wine. They are serving these all summer long and you can choose from orange and mango, gin and tonic or fruit punch.
